Honestly, it fascinates me to reflect on how much this topic has progressed across the market in just twelve months. Back then, I framed AI as a leverage tool: use it early or get left behind. It felt true at the time. A year later, it feels reductive. AI is not a blunt force leverage tool. We can use it to produce more. But does more = better? Of course not. If more was better then AI slop would be embraced by society, not vehemently resisted. Which brings us to the topic of judgment.

To quote Naval Ravikant,

A leveraged worker can out-produce a non-leveraged worker by a factor of one thousand or ten thousand. With a leveraged worker, judgment is far more important than how much time they put in or how hard they work.

Judgment is defined as “the ability to make considered decisions or come to sensible conclusions.” AI is everywhere these days. From our Super Bowl commercials to our customer service interactions. Judgment is not everywhere. Writing Rich Future for the past 52 weeks taught me that trusted judgment is more scarce than information, access, or even capital. AI makes it easier than ever to produce and harder than ever to discern.

My goal for Year 2 is to simply continue earning your trust. Some of you periodically share with me various business and investment decisions you’ve made based on what you read here. And anyone who knows me IRL knows I simply love helping people make money. So please keep doing that. Your wins mean more to me than any growth metric I could share today. But hey, a few highlights from the past year:

I’ve learned a lot about myself as both writer and founder over the past 52 weeks of shipping these briefs. I’ve learned that synthesizing the future of AI, money, and culture into something worth reading every seven days is cognitively demanding. The first few Sundays after hitting publish my brain felt like my grandma’s famous fruit jello.

I experimented with Substack Notes a ton and had some viral success but if you were to ask me our relationship status today, I’d tell you… it’s complicated. I know the formats that work to grow but there’s just something about publishing thoughtful work into a feed and watching it float alongside AI-generated garbage that kinda ruins the fun. More broadly, now that I’m five years into entrepreneurship and one year into building a media business, I am pretty clear on the fact that I do not want to be chronically online, nor posting “breaking news” content that spikes readers’ cortisol. I’m interested in building the version of a media business that’s also a lifestyle business.

To me, a lifestyle business means the quality of your work and the quality of your life outside of work amplify each other. I’ve learned my writing quality improves when there’s a bit more flex in my publishing schedule. I believe shipping the Weekly Brief, every Sunday was the right call for Rich Future’s first year. I was building something new, in front of a new audience, so the Sunday rhythm established familiarity. Now we’re entering year 2. Many of you have seen me cook. I want to level up my cooking, which means creating some flexibility to share what I’m seeing about the future of work and money when there’s a strong market signal compelling me to write vs. generating on demand. You'll still hear from me weekly-ish, just not necessarily on Sundays.

Things to look forward to: I’m starting to put more time and energy into something I announced back in January…

Rich IRL.

You might’ve already seen the spotlight series I launched earlier this year, featuring founders building the future of in-person experiences. That series will continue next month with a business model I’m very bullish on. Our NY, LA, and Miami readers may enjoy that one especially.

I'm also stepping into the arena myself.

I joined a social club here in Scottsdale last May that gathered interesting people for dinners and other experiences. The dinners have themed topics like “Love in the Digital Age” or “The Future of AI” (shocking that I’d turn up for a future of AI event, right?) I noticed they did a great job of bringing people together who came from diverse backgrounds and experiences but were similar on one of the Big 5 personality traits… openness. If you’re familiar with my work, then it’s likely no surprise that openness is one of my highest scoring traits. I imagine many of you score high in this area too. It’s good to be surrounded by people with similar levels of openness, especially if you’re building things.

These topics I write about every week inside this newsletter: AI, the future of money, culture shifts, etc… I'm hungry to explore these through conversations with fellow builders IRL.

Building things, whether it be a business or portfolio, can feel lonely. I know it because I feel it too. The result of me moving seven times in the past six years is that my social circle is spread out across the country. And I haven’t found the antidote to that in a Slack community or networking event with lanyards and corporate pleasantries. Instead, I’m discovering that my life feels richer on the other side of a great meal, seated among interesting people, having conversations that leave us feeling more energized about the future than when we sat down.

So… I’m hosting the first Rich IRL dinner here in Scottsdale this spring. 12 seats. This first one is for female founders. Future dinners will explore different themes, cities, and guest lists. This is just the beginning.

Year 2 is where things get fun.

I’ve been thinking about careers.

For most of modern history, a career lasted about 30 years. You trained once, entered a field, then gradually advanced inside it. Your career had a shape that was legible to you and everyone around you. Your parents could explain said career to their friends at dinner. For me, that was my finance career.

That structure is crumbling.

I’m seeing a growing number of LinkedIn bios that read like resume speed dating.

Founder.
Advisor.
Writer.
Former operator.
Angel investor.
Recovering 9 to 5er.
Occasional DJ.

Career professionals are cycling through different careers every 3-5 years… sometimes by choice, and more commonly, because industries are evolving faster than any single skillset can keep pace with. Most of the conversations I see around this shift focus on the career part. How to pivot. How to reskill. How to stay relevant. That’s fine.

What I find more interesting is that every major system of adult life was designed for the 30-year career. We're living 5-year life paths inside 30-year systems. What happens when the assumptions our systems were built on stop being true?

Financial planning assumes a predictable income curve: accumulate steadily from age 22, peak around 50, draw down in retirement. Pensions, 401k strategies, disability insurance, 30-year mortgages pegged to 30-year income trajectories… these financial vehicles are built on the assumption of stable employment, but they stop working if the average career now resets every few years. There’s a growing skill gap (and infrastructure gap) tied to this shift from maximizing earnings on a single trajectory to managing transitions between them and maximizing your earnings across multiple careers, often simultaneously. Most financial products haven’t caught up to this yet which means most financial advisors haven’t either.

Geography was a one-time decision for most of the 20th century. You moved for the job and stayed for the job. But if work is happening in 3-5 year chapters, then geography becomes a recurring question. It gets harder to justify a permanent move to the city where your industry is. Renting makes more sense for more people for longer chapters. Real estate markets that depend on employer-driven migration (ie: Seattle, Detroit) lose their growth engine. And there’s cities like Austin, where there are about equal inbound and outbound population flows. It’s interesting to consider how many other cities will become revolving doors. I think we’re about to see a wave of businesses serving people who don’t stay anywhere for 30 years with things like portable financial products, flexible housing, and platforms that enable people to plug into community across multiple cities.

Identity is another system that feels under-explored. I’m seeing more content and online coaching aimed at helping people transition from one career identity to another which is partly growing in popularity because of AI’s disruption to the job market but if careers are 3-5 year chapters, we’re looking at 8-12 identity transitions across a working life. An identity crisis isn’t a one-time, mid-career event anymore. Grieving an old version of self begins to follow a recurring rhythm. There will be people who can’t metabolize that and experience every transition as a personal crisis. Most of the identity-transition support emerging today assumes you’re moving toward the next stable identity. That assumption may not hold. I see psychological flexibility as one of the most important skills of the next decade.

Education is one of the clearest systems built for the 30-year career. The traditional model assumes you front-load training, enter a field, and compound that knowledge for decades. A four-year degree for a 30-year career had clear ROI. But a four-year degree for one 3-5 year chapter?… Not so much. Learning must evolve to become continuous, modular, and less tied to any single domain. Meta-learning (learning how to learn) and cross-domain thinking become core competencies, leveraged across chapters.

Relationships were historically organized around stable work identities. If both people in a partnership are cycling through career chapters on different timelines, the relationship has to be more flexible than either career. And if your work friends churn every few years, you’re rebuilding social connections from scratch each chapter unless you’ve invested in relationships that exist outside of work context.

Every major system of adult life was designed for stability: financial, geographic, psychological, educational, relational.

Income followed a curve you could predict at 22.

I’m on my third chapter now, building Rich Future. Next week, we’ll be celebrating its one-year anniversary! Will save my in-depth reflections for then but for today I’ll say that I’ve learned more about careers, identity, and relationships in the past 12 months of building a media business than I did in 12 years of corporate finance.

We’re living 5-year lives inside 30-year systems.

The people who see that early will build richer futures.

I drank the Kool-Aid. I pivoted away from a successful business last year to bet on an AI narrative I’m now questioning. While I still believe AI is transformative, I now realize the distance between what it can do today and what the AI hype narrative says it will do tomorrow is a gap being exploited by companies with a financial interest to close it faster than reality suggests.

This is the graph that clarified things for me.

It was published by Anthropic this week in their latest labor market impact report. Anthropic makes Claude. Claude is an LLM. I use Claude daily. Steven Bartlett shared the same graphic to his millions of LinkedIn followers and it’s already one of his highest engaged posts of 2026 which tells us just how frothy the hype is surrounding the “AI will replace jobs” narrative right now.

In his post, he muses that we’re at maybe 5% of where this technology could be deployed in the job market and ended with a thought about AI giving us permission to be fully human again.

I like Steven. I admire him as a media entrepreneur. I’ve also spent years looking at charts like these in company pitch decks. This graph is a total addressable market (TAM) slide. It’s important we see that for exactly what it is… a marketing tool. Anthropic sells AI tools and is publishing research about how much more of its product the economy could potentially buy. Buyers being both enterprise and consumer. Anthropic’s own reporting highlights computer programming work as the most exposed occupation with 75% automation coverage.

Meanwhile, their careers page has 120+ open engineering roles. So either Anthropic is hiring people into roles they plan to automate or something else is going on. This is one of the most resourced AI companies on the planet. They supply technology to the Pentagon. If anyone can replace engineering work with AI, surely it's Anthropic?

So then I got to thinking about how much merit there is to the blue parts of the graph. It maps what LLMs could theoretically replace, which includes 94% of Business & Finance activities. Right… so it assumes the economy remains static while automation rolls over it. Their model doesn’t account for the roles that haven't been invented yet because it's measuring today's tasks against today's jobs. New technology creates new problems. New problems create new work. Anthropic itself didn't exist five years ago. Now it needs 120 engineers. Plus, every company of every size is going to need people to manage the AI outputs that were supposed to replace the people.

Meanwhile…

On February 26th, Block laid off 40% of its 10,000 person workforce, despite gross profit being up 24% YoY. The company CEO, Jack Dorsey, cited AI as the reason for layoffs, “we're already seeing that the intelligence tools we’re creating and using, paired with smaller and flatter teams, are enabling a new way of working which fundamentally changes what it means to build and run a company. and that's accelerating rapidly.”

The stock jumped 17%.

I saw Jack’s announcement and chose not to write about it last week because my gut sense was there was something more to the story. Turns out that was true. A few days later, Naoko Takeda, a data scientist at Block and part of the 60% who survived the cuts, quit publicly. She said the company had been aggressively pushing employees to adopt AI tools internally for months. Despite that push, Naoko felt the productivity gains were minimal, “Personally, I saw very limited gains in productivity from AI, nothing nearly profound enough to justify tossing out half of the company's workforce along with their institutional knowledge and expertise.”

From there, Bloomberg raised the question of AI-washing, which refers to a company’s use of AI as the public justification for a decision that's actually driven by something more mundane like cost cutting or an over-hiring correction. Then, Block's former Head of Communications published a guest essay in the New York Times, confessing that the AI job cuts aren’t what they seem. Upon analysis of the roles that were cut (the policy team, DEI) it looks more like typical cost management with an AI-maxxing headline. Even Sam Altman said some companies are using AI as cover for layoffs unrelated to the technology, that they want to make anyway.

This situation is clearly not unique to Block.

The fact that their stock jumped 17% means that public company CEOs are now incentivized to reduce headcount and package it as innovation. While this is happening, Whoop’s CEO, Will Ahmed, announced this week that his company is nearly doubling its workforce. His take is that investing in talent and investing in AI are not mutually exclusive. I agree with him. It’s interesting how small the amplification of hiring announcements are compared to the layoffs. The pain for 4,000 people is real. But the story being told about why is doing more work for Block’s stock price than for the truth.

The reason the AI hype marketing play is so effective is because it pushes on two of the deepest human pain points… the fear that we’re replaceable and the fear of income loss. Press pain points. Sell solution… which is a pretty standard business model. We need to stop engaging with it like it's prophecy.

It’s time to start asking better questions like, “Who published this? What do they sell? What am I being primed to believe?”

AI hype has peaked.

To be clear, I’m not saying AI itself has peaked. Robotics and world models are coming in behind the LLM wave and will be genuinely transformative. But the hype… yeah. She peaked. I think the next few months are going to be uncomfortable for many people I respect as they reconcile hype with data. It’s certainly been an eye-opening week for me. I drank the Kool-Aid. Now I need something for the stomach ache.

• Replit CEO suggests being “brainrotted” & “terminally online” is an advantage in the AI age. Replit sells AI coding software.

• How many AI tools is too many? Harvard thinks the answer is 4.

• Les Mills surveyed 10K+ consumers across five continents and found only 10% prefer AI-led workouts. The majority prefer human for expertise and community.

Speaking of which, I noticed that dozens of Super Bowl commercials went out early this year and many were about AI. I also noticed that 30-second ads are selling for $10 million. In 2023, the top price was $7 million so that’s a 43% jump in 3 years. Wild, eh?

Today we’ll discuss five ads that stood out to me from a Rich Future POV because they indicate where money is flowing and what bets are being placed on the future in 2026.

First up…

Hims & Hers “Rich People Live Longer”

Hims & Hers came out swinging with this one. "Rich people live longer" is narrated by Common, accompanied by Succession-style visuals and a thinly veiled Bryan Johnson cameo. The thesis is the wealth gap is a health gap. The rich get custom-formulated peptides, specialists on call, and preventative care before they need it. Hims & Hers positions itself as the equalizer by offering "the same science, the same access, no connections required."

The main point to take here is that the longevity economy is no longer niche. When a $6.7B telehealth company spends $16M to take on the privatized U.S. healthcare system on national television, it’s because the addressable market is massive.

It’s inspired me to think more broadly across conversations I’ve had with my family, my non-founder friends, my neighbors, at social dinners, basically anywhere in my life over the past six months and I realized that everyone is solving for the same thing:

More in-person connection.

…which tracks when you consider that we’re through a loneliness epidemic. I’m sure you’ve heard that it spiked in 2020 due to pandemic isolation but the lesser hyped narrative is that more people are reporting feelings of loneliness than in peak-pandemic years. According to a recent APA survey (2025), 54% of U.S. adults self-report they feel lonely.

More than 1 in 2 adults.

While there’s a list of contributing factors, I bet most people would agree that our smartphones are at the top of that list.

The smartphone became ubiquitous in 2015.

Researchers noticed a sharp rise in loneliness in the 2010s.

When I started writing Rich Future last year, I wasn’t thinking much about the culture of loneliness.

My attention was often focused on the AI race. Models, capital flows, geopolitics. That moment when DeepSeek punctured the assumption that AI dominance would remain neatly Western and well-capitalized. The ongoing “AI bubble or not” debate.

Even so, one of the most memorable moments from my AI research is almost a year ago now (February 2025) where Sam Altman was being interviewed in Japan and spoke to OpenAI’s plans to build an AI hardware device that aims to replace iPhone and Android devices.

I’ve since written about AI wearables here. We will see these become a huge culture topic during 2026.

The rise of AI wearables means the rise of efficiency means the rise of people having more time back in their day.

Connect that to the rise of loneliness and you get a convergence into more time availability and desire for IRL experiences.

That infrastructure is being built right now. I’m watching it happen across my network. Founders launching membership clubs, dinner series, podcast events, monthly meetups.

These are different than the one-off brand activations we saw take over media feeds in 2024-2025.

This is a new category of businesses built around people’s desire for belonging and ongoing connection.

It’s inspired me to launch a new segment inside the newsletter…

Rich IRL is a monthly spotlight on companies in my network that are building and facilitating IRL (in-real-life) experiences that I find unique and interesting.

Use this segment as a resource when you’re looking for in-person experiences worth your time.

For founders and investors, you can use it to track where market demand is moving.

There will be a special focus on Arizona since I’m local here, but I’ll cover what I’m seeing across the U.S. when it’s worth highlighting.

The first one is local, inspired by a studio membership that just launched in Phoenix.

The Good Vibe Studios

I connected with Carly Gilleland, founder of The Good Vibe Studios, last week after their MKR MBR membership launch caught my eye on Instagram. I had a photoshoot at their studio in October 2024.

They have a podcast recording room that’s on my shortlist for when the Rich Future podcast launches later this year.

I like that they recently added themed rooms to make photoshoots feel more playful and immersive. I like that they have a recurring client base which tells me it’s already something more than a sterile rental facility.

I asked Carly whether that was intentional?

“Most studios in Phoenix are transactional. You book the space, you create, you leave. I wanted to build a place where relationships are just as important as the content being produced.”

She launched the new studio membership in January to build upon this sentiment. Members get studio access plus a new community layer: co-working sessions, education workshops, monthly dinners.

I asked what kinds of people are joining.

“Being a member signals a certain standard. We are seeing podcasters, photographers, videographers join with intention of building their skill set. It positions creatives as part of a vetted, professional ecosystem rather than a sea of freelancers.”

I find this interesting during a time when it’s easy for anyone with a smartphone to call themselves a content creator.

What separates a TikTok hobbyist from a professional creative?

Memberships like MKR MBR become a quality filter.

Founders and executives picked up on this.

“Our members aren’t just surrounded by other creatives, they’re in rooms with founders, executives, and brand-forward leaders who actively need high-quality content.”

After speaking with Carly, I realized she’s building a community and something else at the same time…

Matchmaking infrastructure.

She’s facilitating the collision between creatives and the people who hire them. Community + Lead flow.

Feels very… Rich Future.

Over the coming months, AI will automate more of our tasks and free up more of our time.

The prevailing question will shift from "what can I automate?" to "what do I want to do with my free time?"

The founders building infra for IRL experiences right now are answering that question before most people have thought to ask it.

• OpenAI will start rolling out ads to free and ChatGPT Go users. This was inevitable for a company with a $5B annual burn rate and 300M+ free users.

• New York judge flips the script on the AI malpractice debate. “I think there may come a point where you’re committing malpractice if you don’t incorporate AI into your practice.”

• Prediction markets hit $5B weekly volume… then face insider trading scandal. I doubt this was the first prediction market scandal but it’s the first one loud enough to prompt Congress to introduce the “Public Integrity in Financial Prediction Markets Act.”

• The government wants to give creators benefits in the form of algorithm transparency and portable healthcare. This connects to what I wrote about last June on high schoolers graduating into the algorithm.

• 81 M&A deals were made on creator assets in 2025. Up 17.4% YoY.

2025 was an important year here!

Charli’s the pop genius behind the brat album that defined summer 2024, with a “one color, one word, one feeling” marketing playbook so effective the industry has been stuck in its shadow ever since.

Fei-Fei built ImageNet (the dataset that enabled modern AI) and now runs World Labs, teaching spatial intelligence to machines so they can understand 3D reality the way humans do. I named her as one of the top 5 people to watch from TIME’s 100 Most Influential in AI back in August, specifically because she’s building the ChatGPT for physical reality.

Charli wrote about creative depletion… how after brat consumed 2 and a half years of her life, she felt barren until Emerald Fennell offered her Wuthering Heights, which became a lifeline. A way to escape one world into another, by making music from someone else’s perspective.
